The most common reason a vacation goes wrong at the airport is not a delayed flight. It is a document problem. Use this checklist a few weeks before you travel.

1. Check your passport's expiry date

Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates. For the Schengen area in Europe, it must be valid for at least three months after you leave and have been issued within the last ten years. Also check that you have at least two blank pages.

If you need to renew, apply early. Processing times can stretch during busy seasons.

2. Electronic travel authorizations

A growing number of destinations ask visa-free visitors to register online before they travel:

  • United Kingdom: US citizens need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before traveling to the UK.
  • Sri Lanka: visitors need an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before arrival.
  • Vietnam: US citizens need an e-visa.
  • European Union: the EU is introducing the ETIAS authorization for visa-exempt visitors, including US citizens. Check the official EU website for the current start date.

Always apply through official government websites. Third-party sites often charge extra fees for the same application.

3. Arrival cards and local fees

Some countries replaced paper landing cards with online forms, such as Singapore's SG Arrival Card. Others charge a tourist fee, such as Bali's tourist levy. These are usually quick to complete, but they are easier at home than in an airport queue.

4. Names must match exactly

The name on your ticket must match your passport exactly, including middle names where the airline asks for them. Send us a photo of your passport's photo page when you book so we can check spellings.

5. Travel insurance

We strongly recommend travel insurance that covers medical care, cancellation and lost luggage. Keep the policy number and the insurer's emergency phone number on your phone and on paper.

6. Keep copies

  • A photo of your passport page and visas stored offline on your phone.
  • A printed copy kept separately from your passport.
  • Your booking confirmation, hotel addresses and our contact number.

7. Traveling with children

If a child is traveling with only one parent, or with grandparents, some countries and airlines ask for a signed consent letter from the other parent. Check before you go.

Entry rules change often, and the traveler is responsible for meeting them. Our team will point you to the right official sources for every country in your itinerary. Questions? Contact us any time.
