In the Maldives, each resort usually occupies its own island, so the resort you choose shapes almost everything about your trip: how you arrive, what you eat and what it costs once you are there. Here is what to look at before you book.
How you get there
Every international flight lands at Velana International Airport near Male. From there:
- Speedboat resorts sit close to the airport, often 15 to 45 minutes away. Transfers run day and night, so you can connect from late flights.
- Seaplane resorts are farther out, with a scenic flight that only operates in daylight. Late arrivals may need a night near the airport.
- Domestic flight plus boat is used for the most distant atolls.
OBLU Xperience Ailafushi, used in our Bangkok and Sri Lanka combinations, is a 15-minute speedboat ride from the airport, which makes it one of the easiest resorts to reach.
Water villa or beach villa?
A water villa stands on stilts over the lagoon, usually with steps straight into the water. A beach villa opens onto the sand and is often better for families with small children. Both are on the same island, so you share the same restaurants and activities.
Meal plans, decoded
- Bed and breakfast: breakfast only. Since every meal is at the resort, this can become expensive.
- Half board: breakfast and dinner.
- Full board: all three meals, usually without drinks.
- All-inclusive: meals plus a list of included drinks and activities. The details vary a lot between resorts.
At OBLU Xperience Ailafushi, the Fushi Plan covers meals and drinks, non-motorized water sports such as kayaks and paddleboards, and access to the overwater gym. Spa treatments and some special dining experiences cost extra.
Questions to ask before you book
- Is the transfer included, and is it by speedboat or seaplane?
- Which drinks are included, and until what time?
- Are snorkeling equipment and non-motorized water sports included?
- Are taxes and service charges already in the price?
- Is there a kids' club, if you are traveling as a family?
When to go
The dry season runs roughly from December to April, with calm seas and the most sunshine. May to November is wetter and more humid, but often quieter and better value, with short showers rather than all-day rain.
