Iceland and Ireland sit on the same North Atlantic flight path from New York, which makes them one of the most efficient two-country trips you can take from the East Coast. Flights to Keflavik take around six hours, the hop from Reykjavik to Dublin is under three, and you fly home from Dublin without backtracking.

Why four nights in each

Four nights is the sweet spot for both. In Iceland it gives you one full day on the Golden Circle and one on the south coast, the two routes that hold most of the island's famous sights, plus a buffer day for weather. In Ireland it lets you base yourself in Dublin and still reach the west coast on a guided day trip, so you never repack a suitcase.

The Iceland half

Golden Circle, Kerid and the Blue Lagoon. Thingvellir National Park is where the North American and Eurasian plates pull apart, and where Iceland's parliament first met. Nearby, the Strokkur geyser erupts every few minutes and Gullfoss drops in two stages into a canyon. Kerid Crater adds a splash of red and blue before you finish in the geothermal water of the Blue Lagoon.

The south coast. Seljalandsfoss is the waterfall you can walk behind; bring a waterproof layer. Skogafoss drops about 60 meters, Reynisfjara has the black sand and basalt columns you have seen in photos, and Solheimajokull is one of the most accessible glacier tongues in the country.

Tip: Reynisfjara's waves are powerful and unpredictable. Stay well back from the waterline, even when the sea looks calm.

The Ireland half

Wicklow, Glendalough and Kilkenny. The Wicklow Mountains start less than an hour from Dublin. The route passes film locations from P.S. I Love You and Braveheart before reaching the 6th-century monastic site at Glendalough and the medieval streets of Kilkenny.

Cliffs of Moher, the Burren and Galway. A long but rewarding day west. The cliffs rise more than 200 meters above the Atlantic, the Burren is a landscape of bare limestone, and Galway gives you time to wander its lanes and pubs.

When to go

  • Late May to early September: long daylight hours, every road open and the busiest season.
  • April, May, September and October: fewer visitors and lower prices. In Iceland, darker evenings from September bring a chance of the northern lights.
  • Winter: possible in Iceland with the right expectations, but some south coast stops can close due to weather.

What to pack

Layers matter more than anything: a waterproof jacket, a warm mid-layer and shoes with grip. A swimsuit for the Blue Lagoon, and a small daypack for tour days. Ireland's weather changes by the hour, so the same kit works there.
