Niagara Falls from New York City: a practical first-timer's guide

How long it takes, which side to see, and how to fit the falls into a long weekend in Manhattan.

Niagara Falls is one of the most visited natural wonders in North America, and it is closer to New York City than many people think. With the right plan, you can see the falls, ride the Maid of the Mist and be back in Manhattan the same night.

How far is it?

The falls are roughly 400 miles from New York City. Most organized day trips leave Manhattan early in the morning, travel by road or a combination of air and road, and give you around five hours at the falls before returning late in the evening.

Three falls, two countries

What most people call Niagara Falls is actually three waterfalls:

  • Horseshoe Falls, the largest, mostly on the Canadian side.
  • American Falls, fully in New York State.
  • Bridal Veil Falls, the smallest, separated from the American Falls by Luna Island.

Day trips from New York usually stay on the US side, which means no passport is needed. Goat Island and Luna Island put you right at the edge of the water, and the observation points give you views of all three falls.

The Maid of the Mist

The Maid of the Mist boat has carried visitors to the base of the falls since 1846. You will be given a poncho, and you will still get wet. Boats typically operate from spring to late autumn, depending on ice and weather, so check dates if you are traveling early or late in the season.

Stay for the lights

On many evenings the falls are illuminated in color, and in summer there are regular fireworks displays. If your tour includes the evening, it is worth the late return.

Make it a long weekend

Pair the falls with a couple of days in the city. A harbor cruise past the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island shows you Lower Manhattan from the water, and staying in the Financial District keeps you close to the Brooklyn Bridge and the 9/11 Memorial.

Quick checklist

  1. Comfortable shoes for the island walkways.
  2. A light rain jacket, even in summer.
  3. A fully charged phone and a power bank for a long day.
  4. Snacks and water for the journey.

Our New York & Niagara Falls package bundles three nights at a 4-star Manhattan hotel with the falls tour and the Statue of Liberty cruise.
